Risk Factors For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Gone are the days when carpal tunnel syndrome was simply assumed to be a repetitive strain injury, with treatments that were appropriate to that type of damage. It turns out, according to the latest studies and carpal tunnel research, that this syndrome is much more complex than it appeared at first. Now doctors realize that it may have a genetic component, be the result of a previous injury, or even have some connection to specific diseases or medical conditions.
For example, genetics might play an important role in that they determine the form of your very body structure. If you have several relatives with carpal tunnel, then there is a strong possibility that there's some kind of heredity involved, meaning you may be structurally more susceptible to the disorder yourself. Age also plays into the issue, with older people being at much higher risk than younger ones. Fortunately though, such hand disorders are very rare in children. If you are female, however, you are much more susceptible to this particular problem than men. Three times more susceptible, in fact.
There are all sorts of apparent reasons why carpal tunnel syndrome affects women more than men, with the smaller size of female wrists being only a minor factor. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), hormonal changes appear to play some role. Carpal tunnel disorder frequently occurs either during pregnancy, after a woman delivers a baby or when she is in menopause. In pregnancy, the cause may be extra swelling that goes along with it, but the connection with the other hormonal changes isn't yet clear.

These include things like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid problems, end-stage kidney disease and even obesity. Even if this hand disorder syndrome appears primarily related to the narrowness of the carpal tunnel in the wrist, it's clearly part of a wider spectrum of medical factors, all of which can play an unexpected role in whether you'll experience the disorder or not.
