Origin Of The Bagua
Bagua are the eight diagrams described in cosmology. They represent, together, the fundamental principles of natural reality. They are, in no real order wind, water, sky, earth, mountain, thunder, fire, and lake. These elements, which are referred as trigrams also, have ties to geography, astrology, and astronomy as well.
In its purest form, Cosmology is the study of the known universe and the humans inside of it. Cosmology itself was being practiced all around for an extremely long time but the word wasn't coined until 1700.
Many historians cite the theory of yin and yang as a source of the philosophy. Zhou Dynasty founder, King Wen, offered a more philosophical description, saying that there were just heaven and earth when the world began. The two mated and the six other trigrams are their sons and daughters, respectively.
The eight bagua are also essential tools of traditional Feng Shui. Feng Shui is the practice of arranging homes, workplaces, and graves to receive a better flow of energy and spirituality. Their uses are often categorized into two parts which are burial sites and residences. While originating in Chinese culture, many in the western world have also adopted this practice.
In modern forms of Feng Shui, special maps were created to help enthusiasts arrange their belongings more productively. Using the map, people can more clearly see how certain locations in a room are correlated to specific aspect of one's life. They include things like wealth, inner knowledge, family, and health.
The maps were meant to be utilized as guides for existing rooms. Placing the map over detailed drawings or architectural plans are supposed to help you discover the areas that are lacking in luck or great energy. By locating these spots, you can then upgrade and enhance the whole environment. For example, deciding the room's best area for wealth or money and then putting your work desk there will assure your success in those areas.
Visually, the study's eight diagrams have been widely known and very popular. Both the South Vietnam and South Korean country flags have variations of the diagrams. Slightly changed versions of the symbols have even found their way into mainstream TV shows and films. The popular US show Lost even used types of them for the program's DHARMA Initiative designs and a few well known Japanese programs have taken from them too.
