Take a quick break with an Australian train vacation
The Indian Pacific is the ideal rail holiday for those who want to travel in an continuous straight line.
The Indian Pacific spans 4352kms from Sydney to Perth.
That's similar to a journey from London to Moscow.
The straight bit, said to be the longest on the planet, is on the dry and desolate Nullarbor Plain of central Australia.
Engineers have endured the harsh Australian climate conditions to build this transcontinental link train system.
The train named the Indian Pacific travels through three townships, two of which are mining places and while passing through the Nullarbor Plain you might be lucky enough to see kangaroos or a magnificent wedge-tailed eagle.
But the thousands of people each year who take the east-west journey, lasting three days and nights, aren't looking for a succession of big capital city skylines, suburban neighbourhoods or green pastures..
They've chosen a rail holiday because they want to experience the large expanse of the Australian desert, where hour after hour a clear line of horizon separates a seemingly endless stretch of red earth from a cool blue sky.
And they can do it in air-conditioned comfort and with access to facilities and standards of service which compare with many of the world's higher-profile luxury trains.
The Indian Pacific has twin compartments with upper and lower sleeping berths and private shower and toilet.
There are designated carriages for entertainment and dining. Liquor is served aboard the train at standard prices.
In Australia, one of the long distance holidays by train is the Indian Pacific.
Another long distance train with comparable features is known as The Ghan and operated by Great Southern Railway which direction runs from Adelaide to Darwin and vice versa. The ride takes two days and nights and its total distance is 2979kms.
These two transcontinental rail system leave, from designated capital cities, two times every week and have daytrips along the way allowing plenty of time for seeing the sights offered and there are concessions for pensioners, foreign tourists and younger travellers.
Similar prices for the Indian range from AUD$1362 and around $2008 as well as some travellers are entitled to concessions making the price of tickets even more appealing.
Unlike European's extensive rail system, Australia's population spread has meant that trains are often used to commute holidaymakers to Australia's capital cities.
There are a number of train systems including the Melbourne to Adelaide train called the Overland, the extensive long distance XPT trains travel from Sydney to Melbourne/Brisbane as well as to country NSW.
The Sunlander carries travellers to Brisbane and Cairns three times per week on a 32-hour trip and The Inlander runs between Townsville and the mining town of Mt Isa. The Kuranda Scenic Railway near Cairns takes tourists twice-daily on a 90-minute journey through 34kms of rainforest.
